“Chasing Bears in a Phantom”

by Capt. Nick Anderson

Not about chasing big furry animals in a Rolls Royce; this lecture describes the life of an

RAF F-4K Phantom pilot in the 1970’s and centres on the exciting job of chasing

Russian Tupolev Tu-95 Bear long range reconnaissance bombers as they approach UK

airspace over the North Sea.

Speaking from personal experience of his 36 live interceptions of Soviet aircraft, the vast

majority of photos are Nick’s own, or taken by his ‘Nav’ in the back seat, during flying

Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) for No43(F) Sqn at RAF Leuchars.

Starting in the Air Training Corps, Nick applied to the RAF aged 20 in 1974. He was

also a Fast Jet A1 QFI at RAF Valley and Qualified Weapons Instructor on the Phantom.

Concluding his RAF career as an F3 Tornado pilot & Flight Commander with 111(F)

Sqn., he retired as a Squadron Leader in 1993. Nick then became a Captain for Virgin

Atlantic Airways on various Airbus types until retirement in May 2019.
